Meryl C. S. Troop is the Language Access and Deaf Services Coordinator in the Maine Office of Multicultural Affairs within the Department of Health and Human Services. Since 1988 her work has been to "make the system work better for people who are deaf or hard of hearing", and since 1998, “and multicultural diversity”. She is also a nationally certified sign language interpreter (there are 45 in Maine) and is often called upon to interpret for political and cultural events, as well as in legal situations, medical emergencies and the every day events of life to which deaf people need access. She has presented on various topics related to Deaf Services, Using Interpreters and Diversity/Cultural Competence training throughout Maine , New England and at national conferences in New York City , St. Louis MO , Charleston South Carolina , Monterey CA., Seattle WA , Portland OR , and Chicago IL .
